our story

our mission is simple: serve delicious, Japanese street food that makes people happy

Irori 囲炉裏 is the traditional Japanese sunken hearth. A gathering place built around warmth, food, and community. It's the perfect name for what we do.

We're a Japanese street food truck operating across Brighton and Sussex, serving genuine Japanese food - at markets, taprooms, vineyards, private events, celebrations, and external catering. We also serve Japanese craft beers, sake, and Japanese soft drinks at events that don't already have a bar sorted.

Irori is our dream. We are Koji and Kev, and we met in Tokyo, fell in love, and never quite left that world behind.

Koji started cooking at 13, learning from his mum in Yonezawa, in the north of Japan. Around that time he also started reading Oishinbo, a Japanese manga about food, a different way of learning, and the start of his journey. What began as a childhood obsession became a lifelong craft, taking him through some of the most renowned kitchens in the world, from Tokyo, New York, Paris, and London. But through every kitchen, every country, one idea stayed with him: a food truck.

Kev supported the vision and wanted to help make Koji's dream a reality. Together, after years of saving, planning, and waiting for the right moment, we're finally doing it.

Irori isn't just another food truck. It's the real thing, made by someone who has spent a lifetime earning it. Koji always said he cooks to make people happy, and we can't wait to share that happiness with you.

WHY IRORI?

A real Japanese chef, not a fusion take

Koji trained in Japan before working in kitchens across Tokyo, New York, Paris and London. This is the food he grew up on, made properly.

Seasonal, local, and flexible to the venue

The menu changes through the year, with ingredients sourced locally and sustainably where we can.

Built on TRUE community SPIRIT

Irori means gathering round the fire: that's the spirit we bring to every event, wherever we set up.

Client Reviews

“Hosting a group of friends can be stressful, but Koji and Kev turned my husband's birthday into an effortless, world-class evening. From start to finish, the presentation, technique, and sheer quality of the food were stunning. More than just a meal, it was a fantastic experience that left everyone raving. A truly outstanding chef, Koji served us gyoza, teriyaki salmon, Koji fried chicken, yakisoba, okonomiyaki, and sushi. Each dish was a delicious treat. 10/10, would definitely recommend!”

“The best Japanese food I have ever had! Could eat this every day. Such a vast and varied selection of food all with beautiful presentation. All the condiments you could ever need are available and Koji caters so well for vegetarians too. Koji and Kevin are such lovely friendly people too which is a real bonus.”

Japanese food that's definitely worth trying! My husband had the pork katsu curry with rice, while I went for the vegan version. Both were absolutely delicious, but the vegan option was a real surprise, incredibly meat-like in texture and seriously tasty. Great flavours, generous portions. Definitely recommend.
